Literacy drive sees exams for younger pupils

All pupils in grades 3,6 and 9 will write national examinations in key subjects for 2010 in a bid to improve literacy and numeracy skills, the Sunday Times reported.

According to the report, grade 3 and 6 will sit for external tests in numeracy and literacy. The grade 9s would be tested externally for maths, English and Afrikaans.

The new National Education Evaluation and Development Unit will be in charge of the administration of the tests.

The Department of Basic Education will hire assessment experts, retired teachers and principals to administer the tests to ensure credibility. - Sapa
