Matric 2009 a success, says department

The chief director of the Education Department, Nkosinathi Sishi, said on Friday that the leaking of five matric papers in Mpumulanga had been the only proven hiccup marring the national senior certificate examination in 2009.
“Leaking is the ultimate sin, “ Sishi told media in Pretoria as school pupils across the country sat their final exams.
“I am unhappy about the fact that once you report a leak it adds stress to those students who still have to write.”

He said more than 600 000 pupils had written their papers this year – slightly more than those who sat last year.

The deadline for the marking of the papers was December 18, he said. Although papers from all provinces would be scrutinized, there would be a particular focus on those written in Mpumulanga.

Two physical science and maths papers and one accounting paper were leaked in Mpumulanga before the start of the exams. Sishi said 13 people had been arrested, two of whom were education department officials.

He also assured the public that there would be no delay in releasing the results. The release is scheduled for January 7, 2010, at 9am. - Sapa
