When will teachers see salary hike?

Just over one year ago media headlines declared that finally teachers would be paid a decent salary. The then education minister Naledi Pandor declared that the Occupation Specific Dispensation (OSD) had been signed and teachers would be seeing quite a hike in their pay cheques.

New teachers, for instance, would be paid R115 276 a year and the highest pay for a principal would be R446 000, a big jump from the existing R322 000.

More than a year later teachers have received a small increase (four to nine percent), but the promised hike based on performance has not yet been finalized. Since then the Department of Education and teacher unions have been going backwards and forwards in negotiations that are never resolved.
