CAPE TOWN: The national education department has proposed a five-week mid-year school holiday from June 9 to July 13 2010 to accommodate the Fifa World Cup. Other breaks will be shortened and, for the first time, synchronized for all provinces:

Term one: January 11 for teachers and January 13 for pupils to March 26
Term two: April 12 to June 9
Term three: July 13 to October 1
Term four: October 11 to December 10

Sihle Mlambo, chief director for national and provincial co-ordination and responsible for school calendars, said the public had until the end of the month to submit comments.

The SA Democratic Teachers Union is concerned about the additional financial burden on parents. Comments can be sent to mlambo.s@doe.gov.za.
